Red Dead Redemption is an extensive western story of loyalty, conviction, and the price of infamy, all in Rockstar's most authentic and lived-in open world. There are so many things to do, so many people to meet, so many places to explore. Red Dead Redemption two is not just Rockstar's biggest achievement to date. It is such an uncompromising game that it is difficult to know that it is better to start discussing it.

Let's start at the beginning, it's 1899 and American outlaws are an endangered species. Dutchman Van der Linde and his gang are on the run after a failed heist in the growing city of Blackwater and have retreated to the mountains where an appalling snowstorm is escaping. Arthur Morgan is an extremely cool and capable outlaw and settles in a history of approximately 60 hours. It is an independent and linear introduction, but it is smart. Being released into the truly open world after resisting it in this intentionally stunning environment underscores the incredible sense of freedom the format offers.

And what a world is, more beautiful, broader, and more varied than the one we explored in Red Dead Redemption in 2010 by a massive margin. There are snowy peaks and crocodile-infested tanks, thick forests and open plateaus, picturesque houses and large plantations, narrow streams and large lakes, dusty ravines and dark caves. There's the muddy cattle town of Valentine with its wooden buildings and rusty charm. And then there is the imposing city of Saint-Denis. The ability of this game to keep it so cool for so many hours is extraordinary and not only due to the size and diversity of the world. It's how alive all those places feel. The game field is full of wildlife to discover, people to interact with, and potentially help, and places to browse.

The final audio effects of the music are outstanding, from the satisfying metallic crunch of a recharge to the background music. The main mission of the story is a high-risk robbery cocktail. Deadly shootouts, desperate rescues and exciting chases. Red Dead Redemption 2 is an undeniably beautiful game across the board. The lighting is fantastic, the facial animation is a remarkable step and the level of gradual detail is almost absurd. The game stands as one of the best games of modern times. It is a beautiful representation of an ugly, patient, polished age and a lot of fun to play. This is a rare quality game.
